Moonbuddy, designed for Moonbird, is a tactile breathing companion that expands and contracts in sync with breathing exercises, helping children aged 6-12 intuitively engage in calming practices. As a proven tool for stress reduction and relaxation, this device builds on the science of breath control to offer benefits tailored for young users. Moonbird came to Made with a vision for a child-friendly version of their device for adults.
Made used AI-driven ideation to streamline the design process, resulting in a product that reflects children’s preferences for size, shape, material, and colour. Moonbird is now a trusted breathing companion for children with moonbuddy and parents.
Understanding the needs of young users
The challenge Moonbird presented to Made was unique: design a breathing aid that appeals to children while effectively delivering the calming benefits of controlled breathing. Creating a device that felt natural and enjoyable for kids required a deep dive into children’s responses to shape, size, and material preferences. The device needed to evoke a playful, friendly quality to engage children in breath-focused exercises.
Using AI for rapid idea generation and prototyping
To tackle this challenge, Made conducted extensive research and fed rich data from brainstorming, partner requests and child-focused feedback into AI. This enabled rapid iteration, generating animal-inspired designs tailored to children’s preferences.
The resulting Moonbuddy device mimics a living, breathing creature, designed in animal-inspired shapes that naturally guide children in breath pacing. Made’s focus on a child-centric design delivered a tactile, expanding and contracting form that feels like a trusted companion in children’s hands.

Creating Moonbuddy with Moonbird was a rewarding journey, expanding their product line with a device that brings calm and comfort to children. Through extensive research and AI-driven ideation, we transformed data into engaging, animal-inspired designs that resonate with young users. Moonbuddy reflects Moonbird’s commitment to wellness and Made’s passion for impactful design.
